When you first open the atrium scene file, you will realize that there are many objects in the scene. You will work on the scene by adjusting one material at a time and then apply that material to your objects. Let start with the floor material first:

1. Open the file “mainfloor _ materials.max.”
2. In the CameraRender view, select the object in the scene named “Event floor” which is the floor surface of the ground floor visible in the Camera view.
3. Open the Material Editor and select the first material slot along the first row.
4. Then you go to the Templates dropdown list, select Pearl Finish. After that, name you the material as “floor material (Pearl Finish).”

Some of the original settings are already set to draft settings for you and therefore may generate artifacts in the render. So your next few steps will be to adjust these settings.

1. In Main material parameters, you make sure that Fast (interpolate) is not checked and change the Interpolation grid density to 1 in the Fast Glossy Interpolation rollout,
2. After you have done all that, you go to Main material parameters rollout, click on the Color Map button to choose your Bitmap.
3. Then identify where the folders that contain your project files and open the “FloorMa.jpg” image file. In the Coordinates rollout, you require to change the Blur setting to .05 to make the image sharper.

• Reflectivity: 0.9
• Glossiness: 0.3

1. Click oil Metal Material checkbox.
2. With reflective materials, it is possible to lose the diffuse color as reflections mix with it. This can be a problem when a client is keen on seeing specific colors in the rendered image. The Metal material function controls this effect.
3. In the BRDF rollout, click on the Custom Reflectivity Function option, if it is not be selected.
4. Change the 0 deg. refl: value to .43.

Note: It is likely that these values will have to be adjusted once you have assigned lights in the scene. It is a good practice to apply basic material settings prior to creating lights in the scene.

If the real-world surfaces are irregular, the next set of steps will emulate this effect:

1. Click on the Material/Map button at the top of the Material parameters.
2. In the Material/Map browser, choose the Utility Bump Combiner (adesk).
3. In the Replace Material dialog, choose Keep Old Material as Sub-Material. The Bump Combiner allows you to choose three bump patterns and apply them to the material with different strengths.
4. Click on the Bump 1 map button.
5. Select Bitmap from the Material/Map browser.
6. Select ” FloorMa02.ipg’ from your project folder.
7. In the Coordinates rollout, change the Blur value to 0.1:
8. Click on the Go to Parent button to go to the top of the material and go to the Bump 2 map button.
9. Select Bitmap from the Material/Map Browser and select the bitmap “texture.jpg.”  Then assign the material that you already adjusted to the slab surface.

In the next few steps, you will adjust the scale of the bitmaps that have been applied to the material. When emulating a real-world scene, bitmap scale plays an important role.

1. While the floor slab is still selected, right-click and click Isolate Selection from the Quad menu.
2. Go to the Modify tab of the Command panel and select UVW Map from the Modifier list.

Since the object is basically a flat surface, keep the mapping to Planar.

1. In the UVW Mapping parameters, unclick the Real-World Map Size option.
2. Set the U Tile to 8.38 and set the V Tile to 14.21.
3. Back in the Material Editor, in the texture.jpg Bitmap parameters, click on the Show Standard Map in Viewport button. Unclick the Use Real-World Scale option and adjust mapping coordinates to

• V Offset: – 5.0
• U Tiling: 0.01
• V Tiling: 0.08

1. Then Go to Parent button and adjust it Bump 2 Multiplier to 0.5 to make texture. jpg pattern more realistic when you render it.
2. Lastly, exit Isolation mode and render the Camera Render view.

1. Download and open the file “Interior Space. Max” from the link below.
2. If the Units Mismatch Dialog in the scene pop up, make sure you select the Adopt the File’s Unit and click OK
3. Once the scene is loaded, open the Render Setup dialog by clicking on the Render Setup dialog button on the Main toolbar.
4. In the Render Setup dialog click on the Common tab to look for Output Size.
5. Set the Output Size Width to 800 and the Height 600 and then click on the Lock button next to the Image Aspect.
6. Select the View list at the bottom of the dialog and change the View to camRender.
7. Click on the Lock button next to the Viewport list at the bottom of the dialog. This will lock the camRender view to be rendered.
8. Lastly you can close the Render Frame window and then close Render Setup dialog as well.

Working on the First Material for Interior Design

When you want to start create a maternal for a particular scene, make sure that you have a good reference from which you want to observe when you create a material.

In the next few steps, you will recreate a Cloth material for the living room scene and then apply it into the cloth model at put on the sofa.

1. In the Rendering menu, select View Image File and open the image “cloth_material.jpg” from the files that you downloaded.
2. Then close View Image window and go to 3ds Max to open the Material Editor and select an unassigned material slot to apply a new material.
3. In the Templates rollout, choose Matte Finish from the pulldown list.
4. Assign a name to your material slot, Sofa Cloth (Matte Finish) by typing it in the edit box to the left of the Material/Map browser button. When creating a complicated material, it is always a good name that assign to the material after you create it. Because it always to easily identify a particular material.
5. After that, you go to Diffuse section and click on the button next to the Color assign map.
6. In the Material/Map Browser dialog, choose Bitmap and click OK to exit the dialog.
7. Choose “cloth_material.jpg “from the files folder that you already downloaded and then you click Open to the dialog box.
8. In the Material Editor, you must make sure that Use Real-World Scale button remains unclick. You can find this Use Real-World Scale under the Coordinates rollout.
9. Set the Blur value to 0.1 because by lowering the Blur value will make the bitmap sharper in the material. The effect of this Blur value can be seen more clearly when you render and it is sometimes difficult to see the sample spheres.
10. After that, you go back to main material parameters by simply click on the Go to Parent button.
11. Then at the Arch & Design parameters, you go to the Special Purpose Maps rollout and click on the button labeled None on the right side of the Bump map and select Bitmap from the Materials/Map browser.
12. Select ” cloth_bump .jpg” from the files folder that you downloaded and under the Coordinates rollout, remove the check from Use Real-World Scale. Now, you will realize that the difference by add in a bump map to the material.
13. At the bitmap level of-the material, adjust the Blur value in the Coordinates rollout to 0.2.
14. Click the Go to Parent button to get back to the root parameters of the material.
15. Select the Cloth Main object in the scene and assign the Sofa Cloth (Matte Finish) material to it and you will able to see how this material will appear in some detail when you render.

The Cloth material looks good, but you can adjust it so that it can  look better by increasing the bump map value.

1. In the Material Editor, you go back to the Sofa Cloth Matte Finish material’s parameters and find the Special Purpose Maps rollout.
2. In the value field in the bump map, increase the  value to 2.0 and then try to render again,
3. The cloth material now looks fluffier and realistic.

Rendered Frame Window

The Rendered Frame window is nothing unique to mental ray, although the entire lower section of the window appears only when the mental ray renderer is active. This area is typically referred to as the “mental ray settings area.” Here are some of the settings that are of most importance:

Image Precision slider at the bottom of rendered image allows you to controls the antialiasing of the image. When the value of the slider is reduced, you will realize that jagged edges occur along diagonal lines in the image. However when you set the value higher, it produces better images and at the same time increase the render times. This slider actually used to adjusts the Samples per Pixel values that found in the Render Setup under Sampling Quality rollout.

Next of the Image Precision, you will see Soft Shadows Precision. It controls the quality of Soft Shadows that apply at whole scene whether soft shadows are on or not. Soft shadows are produced when light is being discharged from an object in the scene. The feathered effect of the shadows produced from these lights that provide a great improvement when you are rendering your object and animation. When you are performing test renders for your scene, you may consider turn off this slider completely because this feature consumes quite a lot of time. Soft Shadows Precision can also be controlled in the Render Setup dialog, whereby it controlled from Global Tuning Parameters that can be found at Renderer tab.

Then you will see Final Gather that next to see Soft Shadows Precision. This slider enable you to controls the level of Final Gather settings from most details to become less details (Off to Very High). To turn off this features or lower the value setting, you just drag the slider to left and to adjust it more higher settings, you can just drag the slider to the right however when you adjust it to higher value it will increase render times considerably. Refining Final Gather beyond Draft also can be done through settings that can be found at Render Setup dialog, the Indirect Illumination tab, and the Final Gather rollout.

Besides that, there is other feature that might useful when come to render with mental ray, Glossy Reflections and Refractions Precision. These two sliders enable you to control the precision of reflections at the whole scene and refractions in reflective or refractive of the objects within the scene. Lower values will cause the object to artifacts and jagged edges, while higher values will make the images better but longer render times.

Then there is Max Reflections function and it able to controls the degree of reflections that can apply in a scene. For scenes that have a lot of reflective objects, you may consider on apply the value of 3, it maybe not clear but it consider enough for overall scene. For scenes that have objects with low reflectivity, you can reduce this features value to save you rendering time.

Beside there is other functions quite similar to Max Reflection is call, Max Refractions. This feature enables you to controls the refractions that assigned through transparent objects within a scene. As we all know that light will gets refracted at each surface of transparent object. When there is object that applies transparent objects in the scene, it requires you calculate the degree of refractions that based on the maximum number of surfaces allow the light to pass through. For example, a glass window with a thickness and value of 2; then a glass vase, it would be 4 in term of it value; and so on. If you value is too low, the transparent object will not be able to seen through.

Then we have FG Bounces feature that we need to know when come to mental ray rendering. It enables you to adjust the amount of times mental ray will calculate the diffuse light that bounces back in the scene. When you are switch it from 0 bounces to 1, it will have a dramatic effect and increasing the value past 3 will have a minimal effect that you had on the scene.

Other than that, there have Reuse Geometry option is useful for renders after the geometry in the scene that changes no long after that. The mental ray renderer can speed up the rendering calculation of the geometry translation process.

Lastly we have Reuse Final Gather whereas this lock is useful for test renders when geometry, lighting, and major material that have a small changes. You can save the FG at a lower resolution (300x) and reuse it for larger final renders (5000x), provided the camera angle and the image ratio remain intact. The Initial Final Gather is computed on one computer only to avoid artifacts. Later, the FG Map tile can he used with the Reuse Final Gather option, on multiple machines, if available.

The series of ProMaterials however it different from Arch & Design because it have a unique material type for several surfaces and it have a simpler interface for you to adjust those that are most important at specific material. It comes with an extensive predefined series of material libraries normally used by 3D architectural artists and ProMaterials are created in 3ds Max when there have transfer a particular project from Autodesk Revit into 3ds Max using the FBX file format. In term of materials, if they are created and assigned to objects in Revit, then it will be automatically assigned to objects in 3ds Max using a ProMaterial type.

ProMaterial Ceramic

The first ProMaterial that will be introduced to you is ProMaterial Ceramic that used for ceramic surfaces. The Ceramic surfaces include objects like ceramic vases and ceramic tiled floors. Here are a few objects that rendered using the ceramic surfaces from the ProMaterial Ceramic Material Library:

There have some of the important adjustment that can be found in the Ceramic Material Parameters rollout:

• Type: Ceramic or Porcelain option use to determine the surface characteristics that can be found in material.
• Surface Finish: Adjust setting between high-glow, satin and matter finishes.
• Surface Bumps and Tiling Pattern: Two different bump maps options that available for you to use to control indent between titles and the surface.

ProMaterial Concrete

The second ProMaterial is ProMaterial Concrete that normally designer applies at the surfaces made with concrete blocks, and concrete with high exposure. A few effects of materials from the ProMaterial showed below:

Some of the option you must take note when come to the Concrete Material Parameters rollout:

• Surface Finish option whereby it allows you to select the surface finish of the concrete surface then do some adjustment. This options include Straight Broom, Curved Broom, Smooth, Polished, and Custom Map.
• Sealant enables you to determine the surface shininess that applies at concrete. These options are None, Epoxy. and Acrylic.
• Last one is brightness Variations that provide you with a variation to the color of the concrete, according to an automatic procedural map and a custom map.

ProMaterial Glazing

This material is primarily by interior designer for exterior or interior glass windows, doors, storefronts, and curtain walls purposes. In this material library, there will be several predefined material and here are some of the samples:

Some of the settings to note in the Glazing Material Parameters rollout:

• Color (Transmittance) whereby it allows you to set one of six standard glazing colors or a custom color and map.
• Refraction Levels that allow you to adjust number of reflections and refractions permitted through the glazing. A value 1 in the option will produce only reflection and then a value 2 in the option will produce reflection and refraction.
• Reflectance however allows you to adjust the amount of reflection that produced by the surface. The amount of 1 equals 100 percent reflective surface in this material.

The Render dialog box contains several adjustments like Common, Renderer, Render Elements, Raytracer, and Advanced Lighting. In the Common panel, it includes commands that usefully for all renderers and the Renderer panel however includes specific adjustments for the selected renderer.

Let Start Your Render Job

You can see at the bottom of the Render Scene dialog box, there has several controls that are available for you to start your work. The render modes are Production and ActiveShade and each of these modes can apply in a different renderer and different render settings that adjusted from Assign Renderer rollout.

When any objects in the rendered scene are missing such as mapping coordinates, the dialog box will appears at your screen to ask you whether you want to Continue or Cancel. This system apply for missing external files or any missing XRefs as well whereby it will ask you whether you want to continue, cancel, or locate from the missing file.

Besides that, the Preset option that next to the Production and Active Shade lets you save and load a saved preset of renderer settings that you set before. When you click on saving or loading a preset, the Select Preset Categories dialog box will pop up on your screen and allow you to select which panels of settings to include into the preset. The panels listed changes depend on defined selected renderer and all the presets are saved in the .RPS file format.

Below the Preset option, there is Viewport drop-down list that contain all the available viewports such as perspective, front, left and right. When you open Render Scene dialog box, your active viewport will be highlighted in the Viewport drop-down list and the viewport that selected is the one that will gets rendered.

After that, the small lock icon next to the Viewport show the selected viewport will always be ren­dered when the Render button is clicked. Later that, when you click the Render button, the Rendering dialog box appears to displays all the settings for the current render job and tracks its progress.

Understand Some of The Common Parameters Functions

Specifying Range And Size

The Time Output section is extremely important to designer because it defines which animation frames that need to be render in the output. First of all, let look at the Single option renders, it show only the current frame specified at the Time Slider. Then the Active Time Segment option renders completely all the frames within the range of frames. To help your job much more easily, the Range option will provide you the help you need just by set a range of frames require to be rendered by key in the beginning and ending frame numbers.

The Every Nth Frame value is active for the Active Time Segment and Range options and it renders every nth frame in the active segment. In term of file format, you don’t need to render long animation sequences using the .AVI, .MPEG, or .MOV formats because it causes you all lot of trouble and the entire file will be corrupt. Instead, it is recommended to render the frames as individual images. These individual images can then be use to reassembled into a video format using the Video Editing Software such as Adobe’s After Effect.

Other than that, Output Size sections at render dialog box actually use to determine the resolution for the images or animation that rendered. It contain the drop-down list of standard film and video resolutions, various 35mm and 70mm options, Anamorphic, Panavision, IMAX, VistaVision, NTSC, PAL, and HDTV standards. Plus, a Custom option is available for you to determine your own resolution.

Render options

The Options section below the Output Size contains some functions like Atmospherics, Effects, Displacement, Video Color Check, Render to Fields, Render Hidden Geometry, Area Lights/Shadows as Points, Force 2-Sided and Super Black

• Atmospherics is use to renders any atmospheric effects that are set up in the Environment dialog box
• Effects are allows you to render any effects that have been set up in the scene.
• Displacement are enables you to render any surface displacement caused by displacement modifier.
• Video Color Check are allows you to check for nonsafe NTSC or PAL colors. Nonsafe means the colors played incorrectly when these formats are used.
• Render to Fields are actually enables you to render an animations as fields. It normally is used by video formats.
• Render Hidden Geometry is actually a function for you to renders all objects in the scene, including hidden objects. Using the option, you can hide objects for quick viewport updates and include them in the final rendering
• Area Lights/Shadows as Points is function for you to render area lights and shadows so it can use up a lot of time due to the quantity of your point lights. By enabling this option, you can see your object’s shadow and more realistic.
• Force 2-Sided is actually for designer to renders both sides of every face and come handle when designer want to render doubles side however it also consume a lot of your render time.
• Super Black on the other hand used for video compositing. Rendered images with black backgrounds have trouble in some video formats. The Super Black option will solve these problems.

Before we move in to details, let’s take a close look at the type of material properties that you will deal with. Understanding these properties will help to create more realistic and advance modeling. The Material Editor can be adding to create a new level of realistic modeling by using materials many different physical properties. Normally, these material properties are not visible or not show until you render the scene.

Colors

Color is probably most basic function in material property and the easiest to be control and adjust. The color object that defined in the Create and Modify panels, there isn’t single color swatch that controls an object color.

Even if the apples are assigned a material, color in the image might be very different due the fact of lighting system. When you begin working on applying materials to a scene in mental ray, you will note that there have increased the number of material types.

In the Material Editor there will be several different color swatches that control different aspects of the objects color such as ambient, diffuse, specular, self-illumination, filter, reflect and luminosity.

Let start with Ambient, it use to adjust the background lighting that make the differences in all the objects in the scene, including the color of the object that have shadows. This color can be locked together with Diffuse. In other word when Diffuse color changed, it also change together, however it function can be unlock by just click the button left to it.

Diffuse can be defined as the surface color of the. The normal color of an object is defined by its Diffuse color. It show the color that appeal in the surface of particular object.

Next is Specular functions whereby color of the surface is being highlighted where the light is focused on the surface of shiny materials. It is use to adjust the degree of the lighting that observe into the surface.

Then, we go to function of Self-Illumination that can be defined as the color that the object glows from within. This color in self- illumination can be takes over any shadows on the object.

After that, we have Filter that can transmit or can it color according to light shining through a transparent object. Normally, designer use it to determine the appearance of the surface it exposure to lighting.

Besides that, material editor also have function to adjust Reflect. Reflect is to adjust color that reflected by a raytrace material to other objects in the scene.

Lastly, Luminosity that is causing an object to glow within the color that defined. This function is similar to Self-illumination color but it can be independent of the Diffuse color.

All these functions play an important role in order to bring a sense of realism to the material and scene. In order to learn more advance technique, you need to keep try applying very different, bright materials to each of these color plot and see the results fro yourself. This will gives you some knowledge of the contribution of each color.

For realistic materials, your need to choices colors depend on the lighting in the scene such as indoor and outdoor scene. Indoor lighting is different from an outdoor lighting like the sun and you can simulate objects in direct sunlight adjusting their Specular color a yellow tint and their Ambient color a complementary, dark, black. However, for indoor scene, you can make the Specular color bright white color and use an Ambient color same as the Diffuse color but it much darker.

Opacity And Transparency

In the 3ds Max, opaque objects are objects that you cannot see through, such as stones and woods. However, transparent objects, is totally opposite from opaque because it is objects that you can see through, like glass and acyclic.

In 3ds Max’s materials, designer able to controls and adjusts these properties, including Opacity and different kinds of Transparency controls.

Just keep in mind that role of each function such as opacity is the amount that an object that didn’t allow light to pass through it. It is the opposite of transparency that measuring percentage of light that can pass through. In the transparency function, an object with 0 percent opacity is completely transparent with an object that contains opacity of 100 percent. Because this differences between opacity and transparency, it can be defined by the opacity value. There have several options that allow you to control transparency such as Falloff, Amount, and Type.

Reflection And Refraction

In the 3Ds Max, reflection and refraction is extremely important in order to create realistic scene. A reflection is what you see when you look in the mirror that contain Shiny objects to reflect their surroundings.  By adjusting reflection values, you can control how much it reflects its surroundings. Normally, it reflection function is apply at the mirror because it reflects everything.

In the Reflection Dimming, it controls how much of the original reflection details is lost due to the surroundings reflection.  Despite that, that is other functions that contribute opposite effect of it, refraction. It functions as bending of light as it goes through a transparent material and amount of refraction is adjusted from Index of Refraction bar. The Index of Refraction function as controller of amount that light bends as it goes through a transparent object. The object that have a higher Index of Refraction value have more light that bends when it goes through transparent object. For examples

• Index of Refraction value is 1.0 for objects that don’t bend light at all.
• Water has a value of 1.3,
• Glass a value of around 1.5,
• Solid diamond has a value around 2.0.

Shininess And Specular Highlights

Generally, Shiny objects, such as polished metal or clean windows have highlights it own reflection off surfaces. These highlights are called specular highlights and adjusted by the Specular settings such as Specular Level, Glossiness, and Soften values.

First of all Specular Level is use to control the intensity of the highlight and Glossiness controls the size of the highlight which mean that the higher Glossiness values result in a smaller highlight. Lastly Soften value is able to reduce the highlight by lowering its intensity and increasing its size.

However when come to rough material, it has opposite effect of a shiny material and almost didn’t contain any highlights. The Roughness property sets how fasten Diffuse color blends with the Ambient color. This usually applies on cloth and fabric materials because they have a high Roughness value.

Other properties

3ds Max also contain several miscellaneous properties that help you to define standard materials, including properties such as Diffuse Level and Metalness.

First of all the Diffuse Level is help you control the brightness of the Diffuse color. Decreasing this value darkens the material without affecting the specular highlights. Furthermore, the Metalness property controls the appearance of the metallic look. Some properties are available only for certain material types.

Lastly before you can proceed, you need to understand what make difference when come to a material and a map.  A material is a controlling permeates of the 3D object and maps are controlling 2D images that use to wrap around the object. In a particular scene, objects can contain maps, and it can be made up of several materials. In the Material Editor, materials appear shaded in the sample slots, and maps appear as 2D images. Usually, you know whether you are working with a material or a map by just simply look at the default name. Maps will show in the name drop down that listed as Map and a number (Map #1), however materials are named as number and Default (7- Default),
